About Sick Humor

How Sick Humor Was Born

When I became disabled by chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS) and multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) in 1995 life suddenly became absurd: taxi drivers told me "Get well soon," while medical specialists said, "Your tests are normal and you look fine." As I was confronted with the daily frustrations, indignities, and peculiarities of life with chronic illness I started drawing cartoons that depicted my experiences -- transforming my anger into comedy.

Why Postcards?

I've always loved postcards as a fun, funky way to decorate, proclaim my politics, or send a laugh to a friend. Postcards are an ideal way to make Sick Humor available to everyone; they are portable, easy to share, affordable, and the black & white images transfer beautifully. Plus, humor is often the best way to reach non-disabled people about the realities of life with disability.

Who Is behind Sick Humor?

Sick Humor is entirely run by funky chix with disablities, by which I mean me, Sharon Wachsler, plus some help from my friends. For instance, Lisa, another multiply disabled groovy gal, designed and built this web site using voice software. If you're interested in having a web site built, contact Lisa Gray at info@GraysWebDesign.com or view her website at www.GraysWebDesign.com.

But, when it comes to who creates the art, designs the products, pays for everything, (advertising, printing, office supplies), and does all the packaging and mailing, it all comes down to me. Because Sick Humor Postcards is my baby I care deeply about every aspect of the business, including my products and my customers. So I am committed to excellent service and quality.

Top 10 Reasons to Buy Sick Humor:

  1. Preserve your sanity.
  2. Promote crip culture.
  3. Replace that yellowed "Garfield" strip on your refrigerator.
  4. Send one to a friend. She'll laugh so loud at her mailbox it'll make the neighbors wonder about her (even more that they already do).
  5. Support a home business run by a disabled person. (That'll show Voc Rehab!)
  6. Sick Humor Multi-Packs make great gifts. Buy a couple extra to keep on hand in case you forget a birthday. (Not that I'm suggesting your cognitive impairment might cause you to have these little lapses. I , for example, have cognitive impairment as part of my disability, and yet here I am flawlessly running this business.)
  7. Sick Humor Multi-Packs make great gifts. If you have cognitive impairment, like me, you might forget somebody's birthday and then... oh, wait, never mind.
  8. Spread the word on disability rights!
  9. Give yourself a giggle.
  10. Send Sick Humor to your doctor, therapist, or rehab counseler. On the back, scrawl the message, "Aren't you glad I don't draw cartoons?"

I welcome your feedback, comments, and suggestions. To request a catalog by mail, or for any questions, please e-mail me at Sickhumor2@aol.com.
